This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and clinical skills to become a phlebotomist. This course includes study of the role of the phlebotomist, the function of each clinical laboratory section and the functions of personnel employed in the clinical laboratory. This course will focus on laboratory safety, basic anatomy of the circulatory system, venipuncture equipment and techniques, dermal puncture equipment and techniques, as well as complications associated with phlebotomy and legal issues associated with phlebotomy.
The Phlebotomy course is designed to present the knowledge and clinical skills necessary to become a Phlebotomy Technician (RPT) national credential through the American Medical Technologists (AMT). Students who complete this course and have 50 successful venipunctures and 10 successful capillary punctures on human sources qualify to sit for the RPT exam.
In this course, students will:
- Describe the roles and functions of a phlebotomist in the health care industry.
- Describe the basics of anatomy and physiology with an emphasis on the circulatory system.
- Describe the principle of safety and infection control in the healthcare setting.
- Explain the proper technique to be used in collecting blood specimens.
- Describe complications that may occur as a result of a venipuncture.
- Describe special considerations for drawing blood from pediatric and geriatric patients.
- Describe the legal issues associated with phlebotomy.
At the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Accurately describe the correct technique for drawing blood.
- Successfully demonstrate phlebotomy techniques.
- Accurately describe the role of the phlebotomist in the healthcare setting.
- Accurately describe the ethical and legal responsibilities of a phlebotomist.
- Accurately describe the basic techniques to provide for infection control.
